The Grooviest Soundtracks in Film

With the release of Edgar Wright's Baby Driver in just over a month, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 still in cinemas, we wanted to celebrate some of the grooviest soundtracks from the world of film. From Superbad to Superfly, and from disco to reggae, these lot have got it all.

Superbad (2007)

This Seth Rogen penned American comedy is driven by a funk and soul soundtrack. Taking inspiration from 70s artists, they brought in Bootsy Collins to write some original material, with the original JBs rhythm section performing.

Jackie Brown (1997)

Quentin Tarantino is a director known for his brilliant soundtracks, whilst Pulp Fiction is his most well-known, Jackie Brown is his grooviest to date. Blaxploitation films (and their music) from the 70s are paid homage to, with the title role played by Pam Grier, a star of the genre.

Saturday Night Fever (1977)

The film that produced a soundtrack for a generation. With multiple songs by the Bee Gees, and the likes of KC & The Sunshine Band or Kool and the Gang, this brought Disco to the forefront of the international music scene; becoming one of the best selling soundtracks ever.

American Hustle (2013)

Featuring the likes of Donna Summer, Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes, and E.L.O. This soundtrack is as slick as its film. The songs are all 70s throwbacks, there's also an arabic version of 'White Rabbit' by Jefferson Airplane.

Superfly (1972)

A prolific film from the blaxploitation era, it is a blend of a score and a soundtrack. Composed, produced, and performed by the legendary Curtis Mayfield, this is THE original funky soundtrack, which inspired many others on our list.

The Martian (2015)

You'd be mistaken for thinking this is a classic disco compilation, with Gloria Gaynor's 'I Will Survive' and The O'Jays 'Love Train' both featured. The soundtrack forms a part of the storyline itself and features a big dose of Abba, much to the main characters disgust, but it gets a big seal of approval from us.

The Firm (2009)

This is a soundtrack that is somewhat unexpected for a film about football hooliganism. There's classic 80s bangers throughout the film, with a number of disco-funk throwbacks, such as The Fatback Band and Rick James.

Boogie Nights (1997)

One of Mark Wahlberg's earliest acting roles, this one is all about PORN, SEX, DRUGS, AND CLUBS, with a disco fuelled soundtrack accompanying it. The music for the film was such a success that two different albums were released; hardly surprising when you have such a high calibre of musicians. From Marvin Gaye to The Commodores, this has got it all.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

One of the most successful soundtracks, of recent year,s is the marvellous collection of songs featured on the Awesome Mix Vol. 1. The power of nostalgia strikes again, with a strong selection of 70s and 80s tunes. We are yet to see if Vol. 2 lives up to the musical expectations set by the first film.

The Harder They Come (1972)

This Jamaican crime film has an array of reggae classics, and some forgotten gems. Jimmy Cliff and Toots & The Maytals feature in both the film as actors and on the soundtrack as musicians, which was released as an actual album by Cliff (in a similar vein to Curtis Mayfield's Superfly).
